When Toronto native Melissa Rodway took a 4-month backpacking trip through Southeast Asia in 2010, she filled her downtime on the road by sending lengthy emails to her friends back home about her adventures.
Cut to 2025, and Melissa has compiled her old emails into a book, The People You Meet: Luxury, Leeches, Love, and Lao-Lao With A Host Of Interesting Characters In Southeast Asia.
Melissa’s memoir recounts battles with blood-sucking jungle leeches, dodgy accommodations, frightening cab rides, strained relationships, and much much more.
Through it all, Melissa retained her love of travel, especially the adventure kind. She’s taken lengthy trips throughout Europe and South America in recent years, as well as discovering new areas of her home country of Canada.
