Does anyone really know what their retirement will look like, or if they’ll have one at all?
As a working Londoner with a wife and two daughters, George Jerjian entered his 50’s still in full work/money mode. But soon, his health had other plans.
A serious cancer scare forced George into an early retirement at 52. Though he eventually regained his health, he found he had lost his sense of purpose.
By the time his 60’s rolled around, George knew something had to change. He began to study different ideas of aging, and our reasons for being on this earth. He dove into various philosophies, clinical studies and yes, travel, to find answers.
He took what he called a “retirement gap year” – a solo 80-day trip around the world to his dream destinations.
Though it may not have been an actual full year, it did accomplish what that famous right-of-passage does for so many young folks – it gave George a new perspective on people, the world, and himself.
George now has a new mission, writing and speaking to his current and future retirees about embracing retirement- not as a time of passive erosion, but as an opportunity to grow, find purpose, and reach for dreams.
