July 27, 2023 Richard Currie A Scotsman in Cambodia
Listen Now

Cambodia has a long history of tragedy, joy, and everything in between.

For Richard Currie, it was just another night out.

The Scottish expat escaped a dead-end life in Aberdeen to backpack around Southeast Asia for two months. It forever changed his outlook and future.

While Thailand and Vietnam certainly had their charms, Richard felt a deep connection to Cambodia and its capital, Phnom Penh.

He then returned to Scotland, sold his belongings, and moved to Cambodia full-time, eventually working for a TV production company and later, much to his chagrin, as part-owner of a hostel.

Along the way, Richard survived an abundance of misadventures: a motorbike accident, fights, robberies, arrests, and enough drunken blackouts to finally confront his alcohol addiction once and for all.

Now sober and back in Scotland, Richard finally put his treasure trove of Tales into a memoir: “Beers, Tears and Broken Veneers – A Frenetic Memoir About Living in Cambodia as an Expat.”

Catch some his Tales here and then get the book and read the rest!
